The Garden at Glyndebourne

The Garden at Glyndebourne

On a windy day, with the weather changing constantly we packed our picnic and went over to Glyndebourne to visit the garden.

Set in the Sussex countryside, close to the town of Lewes, the garden surrounds the house and opera house, and is the perfect setting for the picnics that take place during the opera intervals.

The day we visited was just a picnic day, and a chance to wander and enjoy the garden in it’s spring splendour.

We chose a place to sit on the lawn and then set about exploring. First the borders framing the house, planted with such a wonderful array of colour, pinks, reds and purples, I loved the Nigella flowers and their striped green and red seedheads, and the bluey purple of the Eryngium Sea Holly.

Then onto the sunken Bourne Garden - full of tropicals, small palms and long tall Echiums, beautiful leaves of the Melianthus, and Poppy seedheads galore.

The Mildmay Garden was full of colour, with apple trees and bright pink Diascia and Penstemon planted alongside each other.

Lastly we took a meander around the lake, past the diving lady sculpture and under the willows, with a quick look at the Star Jasmine Trachelospermum jasminoides, with it’s delightful fragrance at the side of the house before we made our way home.

Such a wonderful garden!
